[personal profile] nanashii

Character name: No Name (later called Trowa Barton)
Fandom: Gundam Wing; Episode Zero
Timeline: End of Episode Zero
Age: 10

Abilities and strengths
Nanashii was brought up among a mercenary group. As such, he was trained to fight hand to hand, with weapons, and in mobile suits. He was taught how to take care of himself and whatever was his responsibility-whether that was another person, or just his mobile suit, he knew how to do both. This includes a great deal of mechanical knowledge and ability to fix most machines he’s come in contact with before. He’s a good pilot, both of mobile suits, and other vehicles.

He demonstrated agility and flexibility to the extremes of being able to leap onto a clothes line and balance easily before walking off. The skill to walk on catwalk rails was self taught, combined with that natural balance.

He has an affinity with animals, easily getting them to trust him where they wouldn’t otherwise allow a stranger close to them. This affinity transfers over to other humans to a degree, getting people to trust him or ignore him as being part of the background, so he hears things he normally probably wouldn’t.

He has an appreciation for music, to the point he taught himself how to play the flute with occasional tutelage from a fellow mercenary. (Headcanon)

Appearance
Nanashii’s most striking features are his long bang that sticks out over one side of his face while the rest is short, and his bright green eyes. His hair is a light brown and he is fairly tall and lean for his age. He has an athletic build suited for gymnastics. He has a smattering of battle scars. While he’ll be arriving in a mechanic’s jumpsuit, he favors blue jeans and dark colored turtlenecks.

Personality
Nanashii is a quiet and serious boy who had to make himself an expressionless mask to help deal with his life as a soldier, hiding his emotions and guarding them fiercely-arguably paranoiac to the extent he takes it. His expressions are generally very subtle unless something or someone manages to affect him deeply-such as Midii Une’s betrayal when he was ten; he actually grew angry enough to not only show it, but to act on it by drawing his gun on her.

Without a name or past, he could easily have just wasted away instead of finding a way to push past the pain of being unwanted and discarded. Despite his insecurity about a lack of a name, he found purpose with the mercenaries who picked him up as a young boy and learned skills that served him well later when he joined up with the Barton Foundation as a mechanic.

Due to not having a name or past before the mercenaries picked him up, Nanashii feels he is worthless unless he is working and being useful.

As quiet, calm, thoughtful and focused as he is, those who worked with him or employed him tended to trust him to keep his mouth shut on any secret he might hear. Or it was because they forgot he was even there, as good as he is at blending into the background as he is as he did his best to avoid drawing attention to himself. He tends to only say what is necessary.

He has a subtle and weird sense of humor despite being serious, making sudden comments that could be taken only as a joke in a deadpan tone. When he does laugh, it is just as sudden and does not last long.

He has a fascination with circuses and shows an understanding with wild beasts, to the point they trust him enough to let him touch them, where they would otherwise try to attack. This display of trust from animals also extends to humans, as Nanashii is swiftly well liked by whichever group he attaches himself to (first the mercenaries, then the Barton Foundation).

He does not trust easily or handle betrayal well because of an incident when he was ten years old. He had let himself care about a girl, Midii Une, and had allowed her to get past his defenses more than he’d allowed before, only for her to betray him to the Alliance (the militant government that was working to take over Earth and the space colonies), which ended in his mercenary group (whom had become like family) being discovered and killed. Even then, his kindness refused to allow him to kill her because of his attachment to her, simply working to free her from the reason she’d betrayed him.

Nanashii left to find a place to call home, to fill the ‘empty’ part of him.

As a result of how close he guards himself, he’s uncomfortable with initiating physical contact or offering comfort, as he rarely was on the receiving end as a child.

Background
One of the first memories Nanashii had was of being picked up by a mercenary captain when he was four. He had no name, no parents, no family, and no memories of his past

This lack of a past cast a hole in the boy’s psyche to the point he simply tried to continue in any way he was directed. The mercenaries made him into a soldier, taught him how to fight and pilot a mobile suit. Taught him how to take care of whatever was placed under his protection.

By the time he was ten, in AC 190, he’d joined the mercenary ranks as a soldier of equal value. During a battle against the Alliance, the militarial government that was trying to take over the Earth and the Colonies, Nanashii’s suit was damaged and he had to withdraw. After the battle, he heard footsteps approach and he didn’t hesitate before drawing his rifle and demand the person show themselves. That was when a girl about his age came out and introduced herself as Midii Une. Instead of killing her as he should have, he introduced her to the mercenary group and they took her in as kitchen help. When she asked why, he told her he only saved her because they were the same. She gave him her cross because he'd helped her. So god would look out for him.

On the road, they passed a circus and he watched it like he missed it, even though he said he'd been a soldier since the day he'd been born. During an ambush on the Alliance, the mercenary group discovered they'd been expected and were out-numbered. As the captain's guns stopped working for some reason, he found his comrades had turned on him, with the exception of Nanashii, who swiftly fired and destroyed the traitors mercilessly and without hesitation for the men who had made him the way he was.

Later, he said that he didn't regret what he'd done, that he'd done exactly as he'd been taught-to kill the enemy before him. When Midii asked why he didn't look even a little sad for having killed his comrades, he told her that he'd used up enough sad faces as a baby to last a lifetime. That he would keep shutting his heart down behind his 'tearless mask', as Midii labeled the lack of expression he typically wore.

During a massive sweep to destroy the rebel army he and his captain worked for, Midii's life came in danger and it was only Nanashii's aid that saved her life, even as it cost the captain his. That attack was the last straw, as it completely wiped out the rebel army-there was no one left to fight beside. No one except Midii. He'd known she was a spy for a while, but hadn't said anything until then. He asked how much the Alliance had paid her. His only answer was enough to feed three brothers and a sick father. He was alone again, the lone survivor once again.

The betrayal of his comrades hadn't affected him nearly as much as the realization that Midii was a spy and had been giving away their movements to the Alliance through tracking devices-that of the cross she'd given him that he'd worn since that day, and the hand-held game she kept around her neck. It was enough that he snapped off the cross and threw it at her feet in an unusual fit of anger, pulling a gun and pointing it at her. Midii didn't flinch from the gun pointed at her, instead told him that he'd been wrong when he'd said she was him. That he was more fortunate than her in that there was nothing tying him down-it surprised him into listening. She told him she hated him because he was empty, that she couldn't be like him because she was filled with things-her family, her job, her guilt. He responded by asking if that was all she had to say, then that she was better of then he was because she had a place to go home to.

Then he said good-bye and fired his gun twice. Instead of at her, as she'd obviously expected, he put a bullet into both transmitters, thereby freeing her from everything except her guilt-killing her in the eyes of the Alliance.

Instead of waiting as she asked, he told her she had the wrong guy, that he wasn't no-name. That he was a traveler looking for a place to go home to.
